Sarah Marsh, a Fayetteville sustainable building consultant, is the first new candidate we’ve heard of who intends to run for City Council this November.
She’s seeking Alderwoman Brenda Boudreaux’s Ward 1 seat. Boudreaux said she won’t run for re-election after 12 years in office.
The other Ward 1 representative, Adella Gray, is running for the state House in the district held by Rep. Charlie Collins, R-Fayetteville. If she wins, she’ll have to resign her post by law, and the other aldermen would name a replacement or call for a special election.
Marsh, 35, was the Green Party candidate in a 2001 election for Arkansas’ 3rd Congressional District seat — a race won by Republican John Boozman.
If elected, she says she’ll push for environmentally friendly practices, continued trail construction and stricter standards for rental properties in Fayetteville.
Of the council’s three other positions up for election this year, Ward 2 Alderman Matthew Petty and Ward 4 Alderwoman Sarah Lewis say they intend to run for a second, four-year term. Eight-year veteran Bobby Ferrell, representing Ward 3, says he’s undecided but likely won’t run.
Municipal candidates in Fayetteville can’t officially file for office until July 27, so there’s a long way to go before any races — including the mayor’s — really take shape.
Northwest Arkansas Times reporter Joel Walsh takes a look in today’s papers at the how the municipal races are shaping up. Below is a link to his story:
