Gov. Mike Beebe confirmed that he gave permission for Washington County authorities to hook up two portable power generators during the recent ice storm — before he had authority to do so. The generators were property of the federal government. Technically, Beebe had no authority to allow their use before the federal government issued a [...]
There’s no truth, for now, in a rumor Thursday night that President Obama was coming to ice-ravaged regions including Arkansas. White House staff late Thursday evening couldn’t answer specific questions but were able to confirm that the president has no travel plans.
I asked to be put on the notification list. No change as of Friday [...]
The governor’s helicopter won’t land at Fayetteville’s Drake Field until 10:30 a.m. or so thanks to fog in Little Rock. All other stops on his flyover of ice storm-stricken north Arkansas are also delayed by two hours.

The governor will meet with lawmakers at 1 p.m. in his conference room to brief them on the state’s response to the north Arkansas ice storm. I’ll be reporting soon after.
Rep. Uvalde Lindsey, D-Fayetteville, was unstinting in his praise of the governor’s staff in their reaction to the ice storm crisis in North Arkansas, saying they worked late into the night working with the area’s delegation to get assistance rolling to the area and that they haven’t let up through today. U.S. Rep. John Boozman [...]
The Springdale Chamber’s legislative appreciation reception was cancelled after all on Wednesday. It was too much to ask people to leave town while they were worried about their homes, friends and neighbors in the aftermath of the ice storm, local legislators said. The event will be rescheduled.
No surprise here: Two people fron NW Arkansas can’t pass each other in the halls at the Capitol without asking each other how bad the ice is back home, whether there’s power at your house, and so forth. Nobody’s particularly glad to be stuck in Little Rock either, despite the better weather. Members of the [...]
