Star City girls win 100th straight conference game

The Star City girls' basketball team beat Monticello 70-30 Tuesday night to clinch the 4A-8 conference championship.

The win was also the Lady Bulldogs' 100th consecutive conference win.

Star City's last conference loss came more than seven years ago, when it lost to Dumas on Jan. 11, 2008.

According to the Arkansas Activities Association record book, that is by far the longest conference winning streak in Arkansas girls basketball history. The second-longest was a 47-game streak by Alpena from 2007-2012.

This Week: Springdale, at Rogers

Technically, Bentonville hasn’t clinched the conference title yet. But for all intents and purposes, barring any unforeseen slippage, the Tigers locked it up last week with two huge road wins, hanging on to beat a hot Northside team and routing Har-Ber for the second time in … Continue Reading ››

Though there are still two weeks (and four games) left in the regular season, most of the spots for the 7A and 6A state tournaments have been secured.

In Class 7A, 9 boys teams and 8 girls teams know they will be playing in the postseason. In Class 6A, 8 teams in both the boys and girls division have postseason berths. That means only 3 or 4 slots per division are still available.

Here is a look at who is in and what a few teams have to do to wrap up a postseason berth. (Standings through Feb. 13 games are  Continue Reading ››

Boys: Fayetteville 60, Springdale 40

Fayetteville's C.J. O'Grady.
SPRINGDALE — Josh Breathitt stood in the corner of the court in front of the Springdale High bench during pre-game warmups and made 3-pointer after 3-pointer.

Not much changed during the game for Breathitt. Or Fayetteville.

The Bulldogs knocked down 9 of 14 from 3-point range to out-gun Springdale and pull away in the second half for an impressive 60-40 road win.

Junior Payton Willis scored a game-high 14 for Fayetteville, while Breathitt scored 13 and knocked down all three of his 3-pointers to help lead the hot-shooting … Continue Reading ››

Sophomore Lauren Holmes scored a game-high 21 points as Fayetteville dominated from start to finish in a 70-36 blowout win to finish off a season sweep of Springdale High.

Fayetteville (17-6, 9-1), which clinched a playoff spot earlier in the week, put together a strong performance coming off a loss at Fort Smith Northside and a narrow win against Fort Smith Southside in its previous two games.

Fayetteville’s defense gave Springdale (11-12, 2-8) issues all night, especially senior center Lauren Schuldt, who finished with 13 points … Continue Reading ››

Boys: Huntsville 77, Pea Ridge 59

Michael Woods/NWADG -- Huntsville's River Gosvener (left) drives around Nick Hardy of Pea Ridge during Tuesday night's game in Huntsville. Gosvener scored 24 points to lead the Eagles to a 77-59 win.
It was only fitting that on the night longtime Huntsville coach Jim Stafford had the court in Charles Berry Gymnasium named after him, that the Eagles locked down the 4A-1's top seed for next week's district tournament.

River Gosvener scored 24 points and kick-started an 11-0 run that helped the Eagles take the lead for good against … Continue Reading ››
