Songs of Love (for Valentine’s Day, of course)

Posted on February 13, 2012 by Kevin Kinder in Entertainment, Tuned In No Comments
Songs of Love (for Valentine’s Day, of course)

While I plan on stopping short of saying which songs you should play for your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day, we have compiled some Northwest Arkansas-specific events for the occasion.

And, yes, some of them involve music.

Like the Valentine’s Day at GoodFolk Productions concert featuring Still on the Hill, who are release a new album called “Red Curtain” that evening. Admission to the show, which also features Walter Savage, is $15. Reservations should be made by calling 521-1812. [Update: We understand the show is now sold out.]

Several restaurants, such as Legacy Blues and Greenhouse Grille, are offering special menus and live music as an accompaniment. Check out either restaurant’s website for details.

For other ideas, I’d suggest revisiting our Valentine’s idea guide, which published Friday in What’s Up! You can find the story online (but you have to be a subscriber to see the full story).

Hope you have a happy Valentine’s Day.

Also, I included a video below. It’s The Cure’s “Lovesong.” It might not be appropriate for your Valentine playlist, but it’s definitely inappropriate I have yet to include a Cure song on this blog until now.

Levon Helm wins another Grammy

Levon Helm wins another Grammy

Levon Helm Band performs a Band song, “Ophelia,” during the group’s Ramble at the Ryman concert. A concert recording of the event earned Helm another Grammy award last night.

Congratulations are due to Arkansas native Levon Helm, who earned another Grammy last night during the annual music industry award ceremony.

He won — again — for having the best Americana album.

Helm, as you may know, joined Northwest Arkansas native Ronnie Hawkins in a group known as The Hawks. Later, the group continued without Hawkins and became known as The Band.

Also winning a Grammy last night was fellow Arkansan Glen Campbell. His was a lifetime achievement award. Campbell is scheduled to perform April 27 at the Walton Arts Center, it was announced late last week.

Thanks for doing Arkansas proud, guys.

Candidates Raise Money While Opponents At Fiscal Session

Arkansas’ 135 House and Senate members began meeting today in Little Rock for a fiscal session on the state budget. In some cases, their election opponents also are addressing money matters — campaign money matters. State House members are prohibited from raising campaign contributions during the 30-day session, but their opponents who don’t serve in [...]

ABA President Opposes Bank Tax

Posted on February 13, 2012 by Christie Swanson in Business No Comments

Following is a statement I received from Frank Keating, American Bankers Association president and chief executive officer, that I found interesting: “The banking industry strongly opposes the $61 billion bank tax included in President Obama’s budget proposal. Despite claims to the contrary, the facts on TARP are very clear: taxpayers have profited $13 billion from [...]

Amount of ‘Stimulus’ to our Counties

Posted on February 13, 2012 by Mike Masterson in Opinion No Comments

The national journalism “public interest” organization known as ProPublica has researched and published a story revealing how the federal stimulus money was distributed to each county in the United States, including those in Arkansas.  I say good for this group. Seems to me that responsibility should have fallen with a metro newspaper back east. But [...]
