Springdale’s Daniels Signs

AN BKG-BENT-SDALE 007 Springdale High senior Ja’Vonda Daniels signed with Independence (Kan.) Community College on Wednesday.

The 5-foot-9 guard played an integral role in turning around the Springdale program during her career. She was a three-year starter for the Lady Bulldogs and led the team in scoring this year, averaging 11.2 points per game while playing both guard spots. She will play shooting guard at the next level after choosing the junior college program following a visit to the campus.

“I just felt good when I went on the visit,” Daniels said. “It helped … Continue Reading ››

Red Dog Q&A: Zach Burton

Burton was voted a team captain and earned all-conference honors in football, contributed in basketball and was named the boys track MVP as a junior. He’s also been voted STUCO president and Color’s Day king by his classmates. And he earned a full academic scholarship to Ohio State.

Check out a feature on Burton in Thursday’s Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Bentonville hires new head coach

Bentonville has hired Jody Grant to replace Barry Lunney Sr. as the Tigers' next head coach.

The move is a promotion for Grant, who has helped lead Bentonville to back-to-back state championships as the defensive coordinator.

He had coaching stints at Clinton and Vilonia before coming to Bentonville in 2004. After two seasons at Lincoln Junior High, Grant was promoted to the high school staff.

Last season, the Tigers held opponents to a 7A-West-low 118.6 passing yards. They also ranked second in total defense (262 yards/game) and points allowed (13.7 points/game).

Bentonville Tied For Second In MaxPreps Cup Standings

Defending MaxPreps Cup champion Bentonville is in a tie for second place in the 2014-15 standings through the fall sports. Raleigh (N.C.) Cardinal Gibbons is in the lead with 628 points, while Bentonville and Carmel, Ind., both have 580 points. Hindsdale (Ill.) Central and Sioux Falls (S.D) Lincoln round out the top five with 530 and 468 points, respectively. The MaxPreps Cup standings are tabulated by ranking all schools that win a state championship or finish second at the state (or section level if there is no state competition) finals. Not all sports are recognized in these standings. Points are also weighted, giving … Continue Reading ››

Heritage Surges Late For State Tourney Win

SPRINGDALE — Bryant had trouble guarding Rogers Heritage guard Lexus Hobbs earlier this season. That didn’t change much Friday night. The 5-foot-11 guard poured in a game-high 23 points and made key plays down the stretch to help the War Eagles earn a tough 52-48 win over the Hornets in the Class 7A state boys basketball tournament at Springdale Har-Ber’s Wildcat Arena. Heritage controlled the Hornets in a 52-38 win on Nov. 25 as Hobbs scored a game-high 17. But Bryant led by two after three quarter and pushed the War Eagles to the limit before falling short over the final three minutes … Continue Reading ››
