Offensive Line Looks Solid For Heritage

Rogers Heritage offensive line coach Jason Upton is still searching for a fifth starter as spring practice comes to a close, but he's in much better shape than a year ago. This time last year, Upton was only sure about one spot in his starting offensive line. That was senior Hunter Chasteen. Now, he's only looking for Chasteen's replacement at left tackle. Kevin Merlos, who will be a senior in the fall, takes over the reins from Chasteen as a leader of the group. In addition, Noah Madryga started as a sophomore and is penciled in for the fall. Brandon DeMello , who … Continue Reading ››

Barbaree resigns at Carlisle

One of the state's top small school programs is looking for a new football coach. Brandon Barabaree has resigned after only one season coaching the Bison, according to multiple reports. Former Arkansas Democrat-Gazette high school football reporter Robert Yates reported on Twitter that Barbaree will accept the middle school principal job in Pangburn. The Bison were 12-2 last season and reached the semifinals of the Class 2A playoffs. Carlisle beat Marked Tree, Conway Christian and Rison in the postseason before a 38-23 loss to eventual state champion Junction City. Carlisle has won 76 games over the last seven seasons.

File Photo -- Josh Floyd, who led Shiloh Christian to 4 state championships in 10 seasons, resigned Thursday to accept a coaching position in Alabama.
Josh Floyd, who won 99 games and 4 state championships at Shiloh Christian over a 10-year span, announced his resignation Thursday to accept a similar position at Class 7A Hewitt-Trussville High School in Alabama. Floyd, who starred at Shiloh as a quarterback under Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, continued the winning tradition that Malzahn started at the Springdale-based Christian school. The Saints won a Class 3A state … Continue Reading ››

Want New Turf Color? Better Ask Boise First

In today's editions of Northwest Arkansas Newspapers, you can find my story where Bentonville is about to accept bids to put down new turf playing surfaces at Tiger Stadium and the Tiger Athletic Complex's soccer field. Both fields will be the traditional green, although I did tease athletic director Scott Passmore about a first of its kind field — gold with black Tiger stripes! Imagine something like that, if you will. I found one even a little crazier today. Diamond Ranch Academy in Hurricane, Utah, has a full-length logo between the hash marks that is black with gold diamonds (its mascot is … Continue Reading ››

Some Positions Taking Shape For Heritage

Rogers Heritage football coaches are searching for replacements this spring for a large graduating senior class that helped the War Eagles to back-to-back playoff appearances. Heritage coach Perry Escalante likes what he's seen from some of the open positions the past couple weeks, but there are a couple of spots that are still concerns. One position that's a current problem is receiver. "We got a lot of guys out there, but not a lot of guys who can catch the football right now," Escalante said. "You're not a receiver if you can't catch it. You're wearing a helmet." Junior speedster Joey Saucier (5-11, 192 … Continue Reading ››

Russellville wins 6A state title

After leaving eight runners on base in the first four innings, Russellville finally broke through in the fifth inning, scoring a pair of runs to beat Marion 2-0 and win the Class 6A state championship. The Cyclones collected at least one hit in every inning, but left 10 runners on base during the game, including five in scoring position. Chase Bicanovsky's two-run single with two outs in the fifth inning proved to be the only scoring of the game. Russellville's starting pitcher, Mark Moyer, was named the MVP of the game for his seven-inning complete game three-hitter. The three hits were Marion's only … Continue Reading ››

Sprinkle named MVP of 5A state title game

Daniel Sprinkle, the younger brother of Arkansas tight end Jeremy Sprinkle, was named the MVP of the 5A state championship game Saturday afternoon. The right-hander tossed a seven-inning complete game, allowing no earned runs on only three hits, as White Hall defeated Pulaski Academy 3-1. Sprinkle needed 121 pitches to go the distance, while striking out eight batters and walking five. He also hit two batters with a pitch. Pulaski Academy was hitless through five innings, but had eight base runners thanks to four walks, the two hit by pitches and a pair of errors. The errors eventually led to an unearned run … Continue Reading ››
