Four questions for four writers talking 7A-West football heading into week five.

1. Last week, the roundtable discussed top quarterbacks in the 7A-West. Who are the best running backs you've seen in the conference this year?

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer) Fort Smith Northside’s Justin Curry and Rogers Heritage’s Joey Saucier are probably the most talented running backs in the league. Both have speed, moves and size. Har-Ber’s Luke Hannon is good. Wildcats junior Sione Nasila is one … Continue Reading ››

BENTONVILLE — Austin Bugos admitted he might have raced downfield a little bit faster than expected, but the ball from Chase Hunter might have been a little under thrown, as well.

It didn’t matter. The two connected for a 76-yard touchdown pass on Bentonville’s first offensive play Friday night, and the Tigers went on to post a 49-0 victory over Rogers High during 7A-West Conference play at Tiger Stadium.

“The play worked really well, and it was good to be back at 100 percent,” said Bugos, who missed the first four weeks of the season with a leg injury. “It looked for … Continue Reading ››

Hood rushed for 151 yards and three touchdowns and the senior passed for 172 yards and another score as the Grizzlies defeated the Mounties 52-27 in a 7A-West Conference game at Whitey Smith Stadium.

Northside (6-1, 3-1 7A-West) also scored 21 points off three of the Mounties five lost fumbles. The game was tied at 21-21 late in the first half but the Grizzlies reeled off 28 unanswered points to pull away.

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer) True. The Tiger offense has been much more efficient in recent weeks, a trend that should only continue as they roll through the easy portion of their schedule. The Fayetteville game looms large.

Four writers rank the top half of the 7A-West midway through the season.

Jimmy Carter (Springdale beat writer):

1. Fayetteville: The Bulldogs may very well be the most talented team in the league. Big-time playmakers on both sides of the ball should pay dividends against top competition down the stretch and in the playoffs.

2. Bentonville: The Tigers’ win over Fort Smith Northside could signify a turning point in their season. The running game finally stepped up and took some pressure off Kasey Ford. … Continue Reading ››

ROGERS — Trey Smith started at quarterback for Springdale Har-Ber and he also caught three passes in the first half for the Wildcats. But Smith’s biggest contribution Friday night may have come off his foot.

In a scoreless game, the sophomore booted a punt 59 yards to the Rogers High one midway through the second quarter. The Wildcats then forced a three-and-out and they used the swing in field position and the momentum to score two touchdowns in a four-minute span before halftime to start a 42-7 victory over the Mounties in the 7A-West Conference opener at Whitey Smith Stadium.

Who will take the first snap under center for Rogers High on Friday night will most likely be a game time decision, Rogers coach Shawn Flannigan said. The Mounties host Springdale Har-Ber in the 7A-West Conference opener.

Starting quarterback Cole Evans suffered bruised ribs in last week’s loss to Jefferson City, Mo., but the senior has been practicing this week. Junior Joseph Sultemeier replaced Evans last week and has been getting extra reps at quarterback this week. Sultemeier also starts at receiver for the Mounties.

Sophomore Grayson Lee, who was Evans’ backup at the start of the season, is still sidelined after … Continue Reading ››
