The weekend in music, with jazz groups and more

Rosana Eckert Well, if it isn’t Easter weekend. If you’re not too busy hiding eggs (or if you need a break from finding them) perhaps some live music is in order. A musician known for her roles as an educator, vocalist, songwriter and more will join forces with two jazz groups in Fort Smith for a weekend performance there

A farewell to Big Smith, with a Q&A session

Big Smith For 15 years, Springfield, Mo., band Big Smith has been traipsing around the country, sharing their family band harmonies and homespun songs with adoring crowds. For most of those 15 years, the band has been making stops in Fayetteville, a place Big Smith considers its second home. But all good things come to an end, and that’s the case for Big Smith, which recently announced it will retire from the music business. While the individual members will likely play in other combos, Big Smith is through, we’re told

Served Neat: The sounds of Straight No Chaser

Straight No Chaser The members of Straight No Chaser never expected to perform together again. They formed a collegiate group by that name, but left the a capella group to incoming students as the original members graduated and moved on with their lives. But when a YouTube video of the band became a viral success and talks of a professional reunion surfaced, it didn’t take long to get everyone back on board. Vocalist Jerome Collins chatted with me about the group, its sudden success and its song selections, which range from pop to showtunes to holiday favorites to rock ‘n’ roll.
