 John Van Horn

RUSSELLVILLE — John Van Horn, 84, of Russellville died Nov. 1  at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 15, 1925, at Sabetha, Kan., to Archibald Glenn and Clelia Lowe Van Horn.

He and his wife, Sara, moved to Russellville in 1963, as he took on the duties of general manager of Rockwell’s parking meter plant. Later they moved to Texarkana, Texas, and then to Lima, Ohio, but his thoughts were back in Arkansas. He worked with Rockwell management to sell he and other local investors the parking meter business in Russellville, which was then renamed POM (Park-O-Meter), Incorporated as it is known today.

After two years, he left POM due to an investor dispute, and was hired by its larger competitor, Duncan parking Meters in Harrison.  This move, although difficult at the time, worked extremely well as he brought efficiencies and quality control measures that improved the company’s performance significantly.

He also went to work on the next generation of parking meters — the electronic meter and current industry standard — which he brought to market in the late 1980’s.

He retired from Duncan in 1992, and he and Sara decided to return to Russellville. He was an active golfer, hunter, fisherman, and supporter of his entire family.  Further, as both a historian and an adventurer, he and Sara have spent their retirement years traveling the world.

Burial will be private in Rest Haven Memorial Park.
